Professor Hiroshi Ishii

Professor Hiroshi Ishii

Hiroshi Ishii is a Jerome B. Wiesner Professor of Media Arts and Sciences at the MIT Media Lab. He was named Associate Director at the Media Lab in May 2008. He is the director of the Tangible Media Group that he founded in 1995 to pursue new visions of Human Computer Interaction (HCI): "Tangible Bits” and "Radical Atoms.” Ishii and his team have presented their visions at a variety of scientific, design and artistic venues (including ACM SIGCHI, SIGGRAPH, Cooper Hewitt Design Museum, Milan Design Week, Cannes Lions Festival, Aspen Ideas Festival, IDSA, AIGA, Ars Electronica, Centre Pompidou, Victoria and Albert Museum, and NTT ICC) emphasizing that the development of vision requires the rigors of both scientific and artistic review. In 2006, Ishii was elected to the CHI Academy by ACM SIGCHI. Prior to joining the MIT Media Lab from 1988-1994, Ishii led a CSCW research group at NTT Human Interface Laboratories Japan, where he and his team invented the TeamWorkStation and the ClearBoard.

Daphne Koller is the President and Co-Founder of Coursera, the largest provider of open online education with over 100 university partners and 13 million registered learners worldwide. Previously, she was the Rajeev Motwani Professor of Computer Science at Stanford University, where she served on the faculty for 18 years. She is the author of over 180 refereed publications appearing in venues such as Science, Cell, and Nature Genetics. Daphne was recognized as one of TIME Magazine’s 100 most influential people in 2012 and Newsweek’s 10 most important people in 2010. She has been honored with multiple awards and fellowships during her career including the Sloan Foundation Faculty Fellowship in 1996, the ONR Young Investigator Award in 1998, the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) in 1999, the IJCAI Computers and Thought Award in 2001, the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 2004, and the ACM/Infosys Award in 2008. Daphne was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering in 2011 and elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2014. Her teaching was recognized via the Cox Medal for excellence in fostering undergraduate research at Stanford in 2003, and by being named a Bass University Fellow in Undergraduate Education.

Jan Cuny is Program Director for Computer Science Education at the National Science Foundation (NSF). Since 2004 Jan has spearheaded several key NSF initiatives in computer science (CS) education. Starting with the Broadening Participation in Computing Program, Jan has gone on to lead the NSF’s CS10K initiative for building the foundation for a nationwide effort to get inclusive, rigorous, academic computing courses taught by well-qualified teachers into America’s public schools. In 2015, Jan received the 2016 SIGCSE Award for Outstanding Contributions to Computer Science Education. She is also the recipient of the 2014 Richard Tapia Achievement Award, and the 2007 CRA A. Nico Habermann Award.

John W. Etchemendy is the Provost of Stanford University and Patrick Suppes Family Professor in the School of Humanities and Sciences.

Professor Etchemendy is also a faculty member of the Symbolic Systems Program and a senior researcher at the Center for the Study of Language and Information (CSLI). He has received the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching (1988), and the Bing Award for Excellence in Teaching (1992). In addition, he is also the recipient of the Educom Medal for leadership in the application of technology to teaching. Professor Etchemendy received his B.A. and M.A. in Philosophy from the University of Nevada, Reno. He earned his doctorate in Philosophy at Stanford University. He served on the faculty at Princeton University for two years before joining the Department of Philosophy at Stanford as a faculty member.
